Varitek homers twice as Red Sox top Royals

A day after Beckett failed to get out of the fifth inning in Sunday's season- opening win over the Yankees, the Red Sox handed the 29-year-old a contract extension worth a reported $68 million over four years.

Beckett (1-0) proved his worth by scattering three runs on nine hits and one walk in seven innings on Saturday, helping to halt Boston's three-game slide since the opening day victory over New York.

Jacoby Ellsbury went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one driven in, Dustin Pedroia had a home run and three BRI, and Jeremy Hermida and Kevin Youkilis each hit solo blasts for the victors.

Greinke (0-1) surrendered four runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 frames for Kansas City, which has alternated wins and losses in the first five games of the season. Rick Ankiel had two hits and an RBI in the setback.

Beckett cruised into the seventh before KC cut into its 4-1 deficit. After the first two hitters reached base, Yuniesky Betancourt grounded into a double play to score Jose Guillen, who led off with a double.

David DeJesus later singled home Chris Getz with a two-out base hit for a 4-3 game, but the Royals bullpen failed to keep it close.

Youkilis sent a Dusty Hughes offering deep over the center field wall to open the eighth, and Varitek led off the ninth with his second homer of the game, a shot to right off Luis Mendoza.

Pedroia's two-run shot later in the inning accounted for the final margin.

A two-out rally in the home first gave the Royals an early lead. Alberto Callaspo doubled to start, and Ankiel followed a Billy Butler walk with an RBI single to right.

Greinke retired 10 of 11 heading to the fifth, but Hermida and Varitek sent back-to-back curveballs over the fence in right to put the Sox in front.

In the away seventh, Greinke plunked Marco Scutaro with one away and Ellsbury chased the runner home with a double to the right-field gap. Pedroia's sacrifice fly made it 4-1, ending Greinke's outing.

Game Notes

In the series finale on Sunday, the Red Sox will send Clay Buchholz against KC's Gil Meche, who is making his first start of the year...Beckett, who had four strikeouts, entered the game with a 5-0 lifetime record and a 2.03 earned run average in seven starts against the Royals...Greinke fanned five in his start...Hideki Okajima and Ramon Ramirez each hurled a perfect inning of relief behind Beckett.

LaDainian Tomlinson Favorite to be 2007 NFL MVP

Reportedly, he is in great shape and well ahead of schedule to return to form. Also, he could have some added motivation to put up big numbers this season with the Eagles using their first pick in the draft on McNabb’s future successor Kevin Kolb.
